Marketing in the Smoky Mountains has changed dramatically in the last three years. If your core sales program looks the same as it did in 2009, you have a serious problem.
Don’t believe it? Today, 97% of visitors to the Sevierville area are making decisions about their vacations before they ever get in the family car. Think it’s only the kids surfing? According to the Tennessee Dept. Of Tourism, it’s middle-aged females (Mom) doing most of the online browsing before vacation. Ignore these wives and mothers at your peril. Most of the major decisions are made well before they see the first billboard.
Just a few years ago, people were only looking online for reviews before making major purchases; today online reviews and opinions are sought before making even small purchases. According to the groundbreaking ZMOT study by Google, shoppers are even looking online for reviews before even going grocery shopping.
Still not convinced? Recently, right here in Pigeon Forge, a local hotel was voted dirtiest in America. Not only were they featured on local TV, they made national news! Not talking to their customers online – and not setting things right with those making online comments, will cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next couple of years.
At the other extreme is Dollywood, a company with a high online profile. Perhaps a mile & a half from that Hotel, this company has an active online staff and they are involved in a two-way conversation with their customers. Result: they were voted the best Theme Park in America.
Obviously, I don’t contend the rooms are clean or the park awful. But I do believe both organizations got the votes they did in part thanks to their online marketing, review, and Social Media efforts.
